Basingstoke people get reduced broadband width

Add News

In June 2009, the UK government proudly presented their roadmap for a new digital Britain in the form of the “Digital Britain” report.  Hailed as a roadmap for the future of the UK’s communication infrastructure, the report sets out how every person in the UK should have access to a fast and stable internet connection by the end of 2012.

Of course, residents of Basingstoke can fully understand why such a push for updating the technology needs to be taken, having suffered with a poor internet service since the birth of Broadband.  It will not come as a shock to its long suffering web surfers and gamers that in a recent BBC report on internet ‘not spots’ in the UK, Basingstoke was singled out as a prime example of a bad infrastructure, let down by the telecommunications giants who have a disregard for our plight.

Over the past 2 years, a combination of Basingstoke and Deane council and Hampshire county council (through its eHampshire initiative) have attempted to persuade the national telecommunication infrastructure provider, BT, to not only upgrade the aging Basingstoke telephone exchange, but also to extend its reach to cover areas currently outside the scope of an ADSL broadband service.  These include major population areas such as Hatch Warren and Chineham.  However, there requests have had little impact.

Where the local governments have failed, a new intuitive named the “Basingstoke Broadband Campaign” is attempting to move things forward.  The campaign hopes that by persuading local Basingstoke residents to sign up to the petition to demand an upgrade to the BT exchange, the residents of Basingstoke can join forces to create an internet town fit for the 21st century.
