Keep your Job in Tough Economic Times

Add News

In today's economy, many people are losing their jobs. Big business is being heavily taxed, and executives are punished for their success. Small businesses, which are the lifeblood of the economy, are suffering as well, and are being forced to cut back in many ways. Unfortunately, one of the first places any company looks when they need to cut their budget, is their wage bill. These days, almost anyone could be at risk to lose their job, and with unemployment rising, it can be a daunting task to get another job. The best cure for the situation is to simply keep your job in the first place. This can be accomplished in several ways:

1. Research your company as though you were a potential investor. Understand where their strengths are and weaknesses are.

2. Come up with an Idea. Your objective is to find some way that you can improve the company. An idea that will save the company money, smooth a process, fix a problem or solve a shortfall. An employee who can deliver that kind of benefit is extremely valuable to any company.

3. Act like you care, start early and finish late. Avoid long lunches, if the boss has to choose between letting go a dedicated employee and someone who just does the bare minimum, they're going to choose to keep the dedicated employee every time!

4. Do Your Job, and do it well. You have to really work like your job depends on. With the economy in a major downturn, and more Basingstoke jobs being lost, it is important as ever to make yourself as valuable as possible to your employer.

5. Quit Smoking, at least at work if possible. A lot of productive time is lost to smoke breaks, which could give your boss a perfect excuse to get rid of a smoker over a non-smoker. If you want to keep your job, your best bet is to avoid smoking during business hours.

6. Talk to your boss. Let him or her know that you understand that the company is impacted by the downturn. Discuss the situation intelligently, and assure him or her of your loyalty to the company, and willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the company going. This serves two purposes, firstly, it lets your boss know that you really value your position, which will improve your value to the company. Secondly, it has the effect of making your boss feel guilty about letting you go, and more likely to choose someone else to let go instead of you.

7. Dress for Success, if you look professional, you will be taken more seriously, which will give you a better chance of keeping your job. For some people, this is an easy task. Others need professional help.

As a good employee in Basingstoke, you should have been following many of these tips all along. If you have not been the best employee up to now, this is a great time to start. Follow the tips in this guide, and you are much more likely to keep your job.
