Overall crime in the Basingstoke area is in decline, violent attacks, arson and criminal damage has fallen recently.

Basingstoke and Deane community safety forum has published figures to indicate crime has fallen by 15% in the year to December.

However figures for the same period show a slightly disturbing picture, in that rowdy behaviour is up 32% and drug offences up 24%.

On a positive note overall crime fell further in Basingstoke than the rest of the UK.

A review is being carried by Basingstoke and Deane Borough council into community safety which has initially revealed some positive results.

The survey carried last July showed that 89% of residents who took part said they felt their local neighbourhood was a safe place to live.

The new targets this year is to focus on reduction of drug abuse, violent crime, anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime.

The Basingstoke and Deane community safety forum has representation from Hampshire Constabulary, Hampshire fire and Rescue, Hampshire Probation Service, Hampshire County Council and North Hampshire Primary Care Trust, to name but a few.

As chairman of the community safety forum, Tricia Hughes recently said “We need the help of residents to ensure that crime and anti-social behaviour is seen as unacceptable in all communities and is reported so we are aware of where issues are”

Councillor Clive Sanders also said recently “We are doing a lot of things right, but we still need to be vigilant and work together, there should be no room for criminal and disruptive behaviour in our borough.”

Ray from Brighten Hill writes “I was concerned with home security, so I contacted Care Guard of Basingstoke for advice on burglar alarms, I found them most helpful".
